Adobe may exit consumer software -report

PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept 10 (Reuters) - Adobe Systems Inc. may be shifting out of the consumer product market to focus on design software for corporate clients and professional designers, the San Jose Mercury News reported Thursday.

The report said Adobe is reworking or abandoning some upcoming software releases. It also quoted and engineer said to have ties to Adobe that the company would not continue to support the consumer market.

Adobe was not immediately available to comment.

However, the company has acknowledged that it is refocusing and trying to concentrate on strategic areas as part of a broad restructuring.

Although Adobe has called Apple Computer Inc.'s (Nasdaq:AAPL - news) new iMac personal computer a big opportunity, the engineer quoted by the Mercury News said the changes being considered at Adobe would mean it would no longer make software for Macintosh users.

''For consumers, for the iMac, they're not going to support it anymore,'' the engineer was quoted as saying. ''They're not going to support Macintosh.''
