NT software RAID 0/1 vs. Fasttrak w/ NT: experiences/thoughts?

As I eagerly await the UPS guy for the last pieces of my system, I'm mulling over whether or not to pick up a couple more of those $100 5.7 Maxtor 2880s and do RAID 0 or 1 under NT. Since I'll have an SCSI CD-Rom solution, I can devote both IDE channels to this.

Storage Review suggests that performance using exactly this setup (2 5.7 Maxtors) was actually better with NT software striping than with Fasttrak, albeit less convenient. Not sure how RAID 1 would compare.

Am tempted to put my 11.5 gig along with one 5.7 gig on one channel, then the lone 5.7 gig on the other, and RAID 1 the two 5.7s, using the 11.5 to backup data. Though I reckon this would cost me the use of dos utilities on the RAIDed drives (notably Drive Image and partition magic)--a sacrifice I'm not willing to make.

So perhaps if I can spare the PCI slot, I'll try the Fasttrak. This would also give the benefits documented by Zeuspaul and others a few months back RE quick backups, etc.

Just thinking aloud now. :) Any thoughts or experiences welcome...

Dave
