I recommend you to purchase D. Landes's latest book, although I find the author a little too conservative: considering the timespan covered by his study, I think he should have mentioned key authors like Hobsbawm and K. Polanyi (''The great transformation'') in his bibliography... but he hasn't! Yet, Landes convincingly explains why some countries have thrived while others struggled. And he puts the whole story in a global perspective: from medieval Europe to Japan's Meiji Restoration to South America's Spanish Empire,... Well, now I have to go...
