would that have been the long-dead NT for Alpha?
Correction, Chaz, NT for Alpha lives! The sole survivor, perhaps kept as proof-in-principle of architecture independence. Very convenient, gives the 'softies a 64-bit CPU to work on while the race between mysterious Merced and NT2K, the OS for the next millennium goes into its final, uh, year or so. On which subject, we have this timely story:
Microsoft, Compaq ally on NT news.com
Under the agreement, Microsoft and Compaq will collaborate on a variety of engineering efforts that will culminate in a future version of Windows NT that will contain components of technologies that Compaq acquired from Digital and Tandem.
What the heck, maybe the well isn't dry, Cutler will get some new DEC code to keep the ball rolling after all. I'm sure there'll be a story soon enough about how the DEC guys at Compaq really, truly love Microsoft, just like everybody else. Testimony of love and respect on request from any and all employees were probably another part of the unconditional surrender armistice, I mean, contract, that banned Netscape from Compaq premises, after the sacred icon war.
Cheers, Dan. |
