From Electronic News Online:

KOMATSU TO MOTHBALL U.S. WAFER PLANT -- Komatsu Silicon America (KSA) will suspend second phase operations at its silicon wafer plant in Hillsboro, Ore. The company blamed "difficult business conditions in the semiconductor industry" for the decision. KSA recently completed a $400M manufacturing complex in Hillsboro to produce 200mm silicon wafers. KSA President/CEO John Matlock said the move will necessitate the layoff of approximately 120 of the company's 220 Hillsboro employees. "Effective immediately," Mr. Matlock said, "KSA will suspend the startup of the CZ and PW operations. Operations of phase one, a process known as 'epitaxial silicon', will continue to run." The shutdown involves the 42,000-square foot crystal production building (CZ) and the 140,000-square-foot polished wafer facility. KSA is a subsidiary of Japan's Komatsu Electronic Metals Co., Ltd. KSA: 503 640-7024.
