A couple of things only DRiPs offer:

During 1991-1993 I was able to buy AXP at a 3% discount to the market price; brokers do not offer such a feature.

Until recently, the DRiP charged nothing for the transaction; brokers can not offer such a feature.

The DRiP is for investors that want to buy AXP shs systematically over time, kind of like a mini dollar cost averaging operation. That is the optional payment feature. Brokers will offer this buy the commission will kill you if you buy less than $1,000 per optional payment.

The DRiP will allows investors to automatically reinvest small dividend payments in additional shares at no cost.

There are other features, like automatically taking the $$$ from your checking account each month, selling the shares for small commissions,
partial investment of dividends, etc.

For a long term investor planning to build up a stake in AXP over time the DRiP is a bargain basement method of buying. For other types of investors, DRiPs do not work. Each investor must weigh the costs and benefits for himself.

Good luck investing
