Perhaps in some cases both, in some cases neither? I still feel that most religious texts contain a core of truth, to which many appendages have been added which reflect the culture and times of those who produced the text. I also feel that it is possible to embrace the loving core while rejecting the appendages. Unfortunately, all too many people do the opposite.
