I'm really struck by the "ratings grab" we see from CNBC and MSNBC as they hype the living hell out of this story: the cable networks see their ratings go up, but as a result the stock market gets the shakes and the share price for the parent corporations (GE, MSFT) declines amidst the chaos. Some corporate strategy -- prop up cable ratings for some nickel-and-dime gains, but blow away billions in market cap by pitching this story that undermines the market.

If there was any journalistic integrity at CNBC and MSNBC, I wouldn't sing this tune. In principle, I don't believe media coverage should be offered or withheld as part of a corporate business strategy. But this isn't about quality journalism. It's strictly business; and from a shareholder's perspective, it's lousy and self-destructive business.
