I2: "Recall Nixon never got to the Senate but we had those lengthy hearings with memorable testimony from Butterfield revealing existence of the taping system and of course John Dean."

I watched those hearings as a young teenager and they were absolute killers. They lasted all summer long and lasted all day. They were depressing. But the big difference between now and then is the existence of the independent counsel who has effectively done all the investigative work of the Congress. This is key. We will get a tidal wave preview of the the impeachment issues at one point in time as opposed to bits and pieces all summer long. And then there is the internet distribution system which gives the public instant access. Hopefully, the Starr report will be enough to make the impeachment decision relatively quick and painless for everyone one way or the other. And if impeachment must be pursued, let's hope that Clinton has as much shame as Nixon and will resign under pressure from his party. But anything leading to impeachment hearings will not be good for the market or this country.
