Jeff, all. Took a stroll through a new retail store that opened in our office building yesterday "Totally Wireless"--evidently there's going to be a bunch of them. Very well informed, intelligent sales agent. Only Q phone in the joint was the dual mode thing that's been out a while (QCP 2700?). The sales guy had no clue about new Q phones or when they would get them--and he was no dummie: knew the whole CDMA/TDMA religious jihad by rote. His take on the Sprint system could have come straight from Gregg Powers: it's cheap, but be prepared to get dropped alot. Still holes all over the San Francisco Bay Area. Great voice clarity when you're on though. This dude even tried to use his phone as a fixed wireless, i.e., as his home phone since he signed up for a gazillion minutes and got $.10/min anytime, anywhere. Turns out that he got dropped from his home phone on days when it was particularly cloudy/foggy/overcast but it worked fine on other [clear] days. Obviously not a reliable solution so he reluctantly went back to wireline for home phone.
Anybody ever heard of this? Fog affects wireless? This would not be too groovy where I hang out.
Will the brand new Q phone permit roaming back and forth between various systems? Just for the terminally brain damaged [me] would somebody take me through the difference between "bands" and "modes" just once more? I'm starting to get the impression that in my hood at least I'm going to need a phone that can grok with all the various network types. Thanks. Mike Doyle
