Greg - having "old" systems with old software isn't so much of a problem for Compaq as it is for their channel(s). The elasticity of the channel absorbs some of the impact of new technology. There can be a backlash (no pun intended) if products aren't moving at the far end, and Compaq has seen some of that, which leads to pretty heavy discounting.

In general, I see computers moving in a dual-path trend - toward commoditization at the consumer end and specialization in the desktop and small server commercial sector. If that is the case, I think Dell is especially well suited to handle the BTO specialization demands, and GTW is seemingly moving even deeper into the consumer realm with a physical retail presence. Compaq, with its Tandem and DEC acquisitions, is probably the player to beat in the next upper tier, with SUN, IBM and HP keeping them (CPQ) very busy.

Just my thoughts - interested in other's views of this seeming bifurcation or segmentation of the market and the players that I think are fitting into a rather "natural" niche.
