To the thread:

For those who requested more information on ''Blast,''
I have looked at the papers published in the open
literature by the Bell Labs group. My assessment is that
this press release was extremely premature. Most of the
papers consist of a computation of the information
capacity provided by a system with multiple transmitter
and receiving antennas. Information capacity is typically
a long-term goal, but not a realistic near-term engineering
target. The experimental set-up described on the Bell Labs
web site has a relatively small scale.

My comments will sound harsh, but this press release
should have never been issued. It describes stuff that
will not come out of the lab before 5 to 10 years.
Keep in mind that groups within Bell Labs need to
justify the renewal of their budgets, and attracting
headlines is often a good mechanism to do so.

My take is also that the earliest implementation of these
ideas will be for wireless LANS. So Winstar investors can
sleep in comfort. Blast is unlikely to perturb Winstar's
business plans in the near, intermediate, or even
long-term (5 to 10 years) future.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
