Agreed, but look at the facts. Ciena management was part of the technical and business "creme of the crop". If anyone knew about serious competitive products, I believe one of them would have acted. Their merger with TLAB was well advised because their target market really only buys from "the good ole boy telecom supplier" companies and TLAB had worked itself into this inner circle. Also, TLAB understands that if Ciena is picked up by Ascend for example then core TLAB SONET products are at serious risk of displacement by ATM-DWDM integration. It is a given that fiber is going to be connected to DWDM equipment. What's going to be connected to the DWDM equipment? SONET gear built by the good ole boys or ATM gear built by Ascend or CSCO?
