Agreed. Like you said, a biometric data capture device is only part of the formula. If the device is remote, it must transmit the information over a network for verification. That implies it must be encrypted. That would be true for any form of authentication.

The positive point of biometrics is that people forget pins, they write them down in unsecure places, people snooping can see them entered and they use obvious numbers or codes that can easily be found out. By using a biometric, all these issues are eliminated.

Question is cost and accuracy. Seems like these issues are getting closer to being solved.
