Don't forget, from a designers perspective there are plenty of hairy issues getting a 2D and 3D core to work together, especially if you want 2D and 3D acceleration simultaneously. It's not like they just had to slap the V2 chip on a 2D card and they were good to go. The Banshee solution should be commended for its timeliness and elegance. 3 weeks either way probably wouldn't make a big deal from a marketing stand point, but those weeks are possibly hundreds of man-hours (depending on the size of the dev team) that could be spent assuring the quality of the product.
