It's the same reason I plan to pull out of the market in the middle of next year. I believe fear of the Y2K bug and general uneasiness about the approaching millennium will cause others to pull out of the market around that time, causing big sell offs.

There is potential for significant Y2K failures at two other times next year. The first is Jan 1, 1999 because systems that look ahead 1 year could fail. And the second is April 1, 1999 as many national(Japan) and state(New York) governments begin fiscal year 2000 on that date. Anyone who believes that Y2K is a real problem needs to respect these dates when deciding how to protect there portfolio. Anyone who doesn't believe Y2K is a real problem needs to research it more. :)
