I believe that biometrics will be used in conjunction with encryption, so that no one can capture direct fingerprint characteristics.

If we can find a hacker who can grab the encrypted fingerprint template, and then know how to alter it so that it can fool a security algorithm, we are probably dealing with the NSA. It will be way beyond what normal hackers could hope to do.

As to "back up" fingerprints. . . . the protocol is to have several fingers enrolled, even if only one is used, in case the finger is in a cast, or cut, etc. So in that sense, there are "back ups."

Costs are dropping quickly, but not yet enough for consumer applications at sophisticated levels. This technology is being marketed via Oracle and Computer Associates to corporate networks, etc., and possibly to governmental bodies.
