When I think of some of the characters in Congress and the Senate the image of Bill talking to them while talking to them while M.L. is in full gear is irresistably funny. Like a Woody Allen movie scene waiting for a punchline. If I was in a position to do it, I doubt that I'd be able to resist either.

If they impeach him I hope to Christ they can do it over campaign funds. The idea of an impeachment trial over Monica is just horrendous. What we've seen is just the beginning. They will plaster extensive analyses of every instant those two ever spent together all over TV. We'll hear long-winded synonyms like "fellatio" and "inappropriate contact" until we figure out how to say "cigar sex" in Latin. It will go on for months.

Resignation is dicey too, purely in practical political terms. Clinton resigns, we get Al. I'm not sure he should run the country without a real electoral mandate. If they hang Al on the spending, and Newt takes over and totally reverses all policy directions it will look very close to a coup d'etat - like it or not, the mandate was for them and their platform, and that mandate should only be reversible by election. Any thing else will be cause terrific dissension and could result in a virtual political shutdown until the next election. This in turn almost guarantees economic collapse.

As a purely practical matter, wholly unrelated to moral judgement, I think everyone involved should take a deep breath and say "ok, we all know what happened, let's do our jobs and put it to the people in the next election". If we're worried about trust level we'll have Starr join the Secret Service and make him Bill's bodyguard.

Sick and tired of it,

Steve
