sheesh michelle - comparing Sun vs. Dell is a pretty tough comparison. Why not compare Dell vs. Compaq - i think any point about manufacturing effincies that Dell has would be understood just as clearly.

Sun is a very efficient manufacturer but its business model is different from Dells - Sun doesnt make there own microprocessors (farmed out to TI, etc.), and is using off the shelf pc components in their workstations - they have brought their price points down to PC levels. As far as Dell's success being tied to NT and sql*server they can just as easily be a vehicle for unix or linux (witness todays press release) as an OS of choice. i think a Dell with a 64 bit merced processor would perform better with a 64 bit OS like Solaris for running any kind of enterprise application. NT wont be 64 bit for years. Intel clearly believes this as well - witness Sun sharing the stage with them at the recent Xeon launch.
