Giraffe, if I'm not mistaken gold was also used in ancient egypt the same way. Silver as well. Up until the advent of pennicilin gold and especially silver were boiled in water to keep the water pure ( a fact).
Pllace a small silver coin in a gallon of milk and it will take longer to go sour than the untreated. Twenty years ago, research at (I believe) John Hopkins Medical School showed that gold leaf applied to third degree burns radically sped up healing and the healing left less scaring.
Electronically produced gold and silver colloids (available at unnecessary expense at some health food stores) are remarkable for a slew of topical (excema, psorias, shingles, acne) and internal applications. research was being done a few years ago at some university in Utah on injecting silver colliods into cancer tumors with some but not consistent success.
the ancients didn't go for gold and silver just because it was rare and pretty. they may have known things we are only now "discovering" through the marvels of science.
