Hello Lawrence:

I assume your comments are tongue in cheek, however it brings to light some interesting questions.

Isn't Internet filtering software similar to censorship? Would articles like the Clinton trial transcripts be filtered? I assume one may be able to differentiate, via the software, between pornography sites and sites that might just have "mature" content. I would prefer my child would avoid the porno, but I'm not so sure that I would not want him to read subjects that are actual accounts of real situations no matter how mature the content may be. I qualify this of course by stating the age of the child must come to bear.

A relative of mine who lives in Europe recently asked me if his website would be considered porno in North America. members.magnet.at He genuinely uses his computer to generate artwork in which some compositions have nudity. (Different definitions of porno) (In Europe, topless beaches are very common)etc. etc....

How "needed" is software like Net Nanny anyway? I sure won't buy it. I plan on monitoring my kid's use of the net the same way I will with television. (He's not old enough yet) (My story may change in time?)

I guess these issues are not so cut and dried. If my child is in a school library using a public computer to access the net, I suppose some type of censorship would be prudent. And I believe the big market for Net Nanny is not the individual user.

Food for thought, Any Comments?

take it easy
