From a chemical point of view, I find it almost incredible that both silver and gold have the seemingly magical powers you mentioned. I say this because both gold and silver are inert metals (gold more so than silver) and that's why they have been used as coinage metals.

From my understanding of chemistry, as water cannot oxidize silver, the silver will have no effect on the water. Yet I have seen people, even in the Far East, who did indeed boil water with silver coins in it in order to "purify" the water. I know of several people who swear by wearing jewellery cast from alloys of seven metals, the main ones being silver anf gold!

Apparently, they are following some alchemical formula or ancient/arcane/esoteric wisdom lost to most moderns.

If they are right, silver and gold will be in great demand, eh?
