The world's first DV/MPEG codec is a single chip which can mix and match the two formats, taking in a DV bitstream and putting out MPEG, or vice versa. Or it can accept two different streams and edit them together. The chip, which is now at the sampling stage prior to production, consumes only 1 watt of power, so can be used in portable equipment. It handles all flavours of MPEG and the cost is likely to be under US$500. "Our message is simple," says Didier Le Gall, C-Cube's chief technology officer. "We are committed to open standards. And by open we mean DV talking to MPEG. We are bridging the digital video formats and it's kinda fun."
