I didn't write the comment I copied, so whoever it was wasn't familiar with the Spartanburg plant.
Here is the newspaper article confirming the shutdown.

Komatsu lays off 120 in Hillsboro
A silicon wafer maker suspends production at two of its
three plants as an industry downturn continues

Wednesday, September 9 1998

By Elisa Williams of The Oregonian staff

Komatsu Silicon America, which makes the silicon wafers
used in semiconductor manufacturing, laid off more than half
of its 220 employees Tuesday as it suspended production
at two of its three Hillsboro plants.

The two facilities to be shut down are so new the company
was still testing the equipment in preparation for full
production. Closing them will leave about 120 people,
production workers to managers, without jobs.
