Sorry, Doug, I don't know if you are referring to the discussion with Scott regarding encryption or the T INC article. So let's handle both.
The encryption problem will be surmounted most elegantly by those companies with the financial and intellectual resources, and the IETF clout, to make it happen in a manner consistent with their own engineering models. VOCLF is among the best equipped in this regard, so while it will be a burden for them, they should be among the least affected, due to their current position as a leader, and their resourcefulness. ------
The INC article, I think, is still smoke. They're saying the right things to bolster their position, and to counteract FON's ION, but Point and Click? Indeed. Anytime I hear those words in the context of carrier provisioning, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Even this model will depend on IP at the desktop and premises area networking levels, despite their using ATM in the edge-to-core and back. ATM embedded in end point applications is still a long ways off, if ever, which means that it will have very little if any impact directly on the VoIP model as far as I can see. And when the ISTP was forced to utilize INC links (an unlikely occurence at this time), gateways would use Classical IP/ATM, or a combination of other protocols to adapt, or ATM itself over PVCs or SVCs, through some modifications.
These are only my opinions, though, and the next tide may hold something new for us to contemplate. It happens.
