>>does that mean CSCO will not be a big supplier to ATT for any next generation IP over DWDM fiber network? Does that mean Lucent with their DWDM and ASND with their ATM over DWDM( with NEC and Pirelli gears) will be big winners for the ATT account?<<
There's evidence from several fronts that indicate that your assessment is not far off. Take a look at the INC offering that T is now promoting. It is almost entirely based on ATM in the core, and it follows that they will use ATM over DWDM to make it efficient.

From that release,
The overhaul of AT&T's network is just as important. AT&T will deploy an Internet-like digital technology known as ATM, for asynchronous transfer mode. It converts information into the ones and zeros of computer language, breaks it into tiny pieces, stamps them with an address and sends them into a shared transmission line...The technology also is at the heart of Sprint's $2 billion ION service. ATM and IP are more efficient than traditional phone lines, which reserve a separate circuit for every call, and the quality is improving.
Although, I wouldn't jump the gun on this, nor would I place Pirelli and NEC in the forefront, either. I'd just as soon select LU's proven DWDM prowess as the chosen one here, at least for a major part of it, if I had to pick anyone, based on their histories. |
