Rainy Lake--International Falls, MN
Looking for a somewhat reasonable vacation at one of the most beautiful places on earth...try Raniy Lake, on the Canadian-U.S. border 10 miles east of the freeze capital of the U.S., International Falls, MN.
A beautiful wilderness lake with 100's of uninhabited islands surrounded by virgin forests populated with deer, bear, coyote, critters, and average size mosquitos. (I added the mosquito part so you wouldn't confuse me with someone from the Chamber of Commerce, they only bite in the evening.)
This lake is a boater's paradise with literally hundreds of coves, outcroppings, and excellant fishing as well as sightseeing.
A boat is a must. Rent a houseboat, fishing vessel, or bring your own. (Caution, if this is your first trip to the lake follow the locals around until you get a feel for the water and be sure to bring an extra prop). Bring your trail bike or hiking boots for a day in the youngest National Park adjacent to the lake.
There are a multitude of accomodations available, though our favorite is the Thunderbird Lodge, (can be found on internet, just type in Thunderbird Lodge) where many of the fly-boy guides fuel up their sea planes and tell stories over dinner and libations.
There is plenty of space for doing whatever your heart pleases, including but not limited to nude bathing and sunning.
The significant other used to believe that Tahoe was the best of the best of lakes for outdoor adventures.
She now tells me that 3 days at Rainy would be preferable to 2 weeks at Tahoe. You make the call... --GARY-- |
