A new CIENA customer is GST Telecommunica- tions, a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) that has extensive regional networks in the Western United States and Hawaii. CIENAOs order represents the _rst DWDM installation in GSTOs network, says GST spokeswoman Lisa Miles. GST will be using CIENAOs MultiWave Sentry 1600 equipment as part of its 500 mile Los Angeles-San Francisco network build. GST is the only CLEC to install optical _ber along the popular and important California route to this time. The carrier is swapping some _bers with IXC as part of a cooperative arrangement along the S.F.-L.A. route. In return, GST has secured _ber on a route connecting Los Angeles with Las Vegas and Phoenix. The company has also connected its Phoenix and Tucson operations via a long-haul _ber network. GST will use eight wave- lengths of OC-48 as part of its initial installation. When demand warrants, GST will scale to 16 channels. The carrier now provides local phone service to 14 markets, including Hawaii, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Oregon, Texas and Washington. GSTOs product offerings include local dialtone, long distance, data and Internet services.
