This is bad. I have another friend who had problems with a laptop. I think that Apple is letting quality control slip.

One of my clients has a G3/250 PowerBook that is exhibiting vertical white bands on the video. It comes and goes, but gets so bad sometimes that I can't even see the screen.

I was pretty sure I had read about this problem at MacFixIt, and sure enough, when I called Apple Support, the tech knew right away what the problem was. It's a loose video cable, and apparently it can work loose in shipping or handling of the laptop. Apple is sending a box overnight to pack it up and ship it back to Apple (for free). He said they will install a gasket on the cable to keep it from coming loose again, and I would guess that they've already made this fix part of the assembly process, but I don't know for sure. It would certainly behoove them to do so.

Point is, all computers have problems sometimes (I've had my share of those will PCs, including Dell units), but it's how Apple and its dealers handle the repairs that count. Sounds like your friend got some bum support. Was that from Apple directly, or a local dealer?
