We went to Fiji in Mar.,97 and I can recommend it highly. You can go on either a moderate or extravagant budget. I can tell you a bit about the moderate budget.-g-
We spent most of our time on Viti Levu, the main island, as well as a 3 day side trip to Yawasewa. We had planned to go to one of the other islands, either Taveuni or Vanua Levu, but our schedule was messed up by Cyclone Gavin, a major surprise hurricane that had us holed up in a hotel in Nadi, about 20 miles from the eye of that storm (oh, well, that was a first for us).
I take it you dive. I don't go deeper than a snorkel tube allows, but I saw plenty of neat stuff off Yawasewa and also at Wananavu on the north side of Viti Levu. Bothh these places have dive shops, etc. The Fijians are interesting people, with 2 cultures- Fijian and Indian more or less coexisting in that country. Don't go on a package deal. It's essential, IMO, to stay at various places and get the feel of the country. A rent car is also a must. Driving is on the left, but traffic isn't too bad (didn't get to Suva, which might be an exception, but it's a lot tamer than, say, Jamaica).

If you want to know more, PM me and I'll pass on some of my wife's links on Fiji.
