(Published on Tuesday, September 08, 1998 at 22:41)

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Japan Energy Corp. has acquired the rights from
Applied Materials Inc. of the U.S. to produce and market a component
used in building thin film on next-generation semiconductors, the Nikkei
Industrial Daily reported in its Wednesday edition. Financial terms
weren't disclosed.
The agreement will allow Japan Energy to sell the component directly
to users. It is targeting annual sales of one billion yen ($7.6 million)
in 2001.
The component, made of high-grade titanium, is used to attach target
material used in the manufacture of thin film onto a silicon substrate.
It can be used on highly integrated chips with wiring less than 0.18
microns wide.
