What Messrs. Mann and Stefik describe in the Atlantic article may not qualify for the characterization "exact blueprint." As I understand it, a WaveEnabled .SMO file may be replicated. The persistence of its copyright protection derives not from any erasure of copy A upon inception of a copy B. Rather, it derives from retention of copy A's "electronic wrapper" on any copy B. Messrs. Mann and Stefik speak of erasure.

There are four possibilities: (1) that I am mistaken; (2) that they speak of a "c" chip only in the abstract; (3) that they speak of a "c" chip that is not the WaveMeter (unlikely, and a probable patent problem at that); or (4) that they speak of a "c" chip that is the WaveMeter (but take certain liberties in describing it).

Naturally, I like (4) best.

This reminds me of certain misgivings I have about the capacity of the Wave system to to protect copyrights in pure text. When I purchase a chapter of Andrew Peterson's novel, I extract its text from his .SMO file. Then I have that text in digital form. At that point, what is there -- beyond my good citizenship -- to prevent me from cutting and pasting that text into a word processor and mass-producing it (or, worse yet, making unauthorized changes in it)?
