Third World Markets

Here is an idea to think about. Recently, I have had a few discussions regarding how to go about improving computer literacy in the People's Republic of China. This idea applies to any technically under-developed nation. NC's are cheaper and should be much faster than comparably priced PCs. They are mostly based on RISC architecture and I suspect their networking hardware/software may be better optimized than the normal PC clients we use today. They have fewer components and may be easier to assemble by less educated workers. Also, their software is server based and hence easier to administrate. Mainly, this plan is for k-12 and collegiate insitutions, and would require a local area network and servers to be set up. The purpose is not so much to teach skills in particular applications, but primarily to expose students to the world wide web as well as provide easy to use wordprocessing, speadsheeting, and email.

Any comments on this idea, or if anyone has been discussing this before?
