Hitachi Data Systems Announces SAP R/3 Certification for HDS Skyline Series and HDS Pilot
Series S/390-Compatible Mainframe Servers

September 14, 1998 06:08 AM

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) today
announced that its HDS Skyline Series(TM) and HDS Pilot Series(TM) mainframe processors are
certified servers for SAP(TM) R/3(TM) enterprise business solutions, providing another high-availability
option for SAP R/3 customers in the S/390 environment.

This certified R/3 business solution runs in a three-tier client/server configuration with the IBM DB2 for
OS/390 database as the top tier on the Hitachi processors.

The HDS Skyline systems use a unique hybrid technology called ACE (Advanced CMOS and ECL),
integrated on the same chip. The HDS' Pilot systems are CMOS based. Both product lines are S/390
compatible and available from HDS and its major distributors around the world.

Skyline has been one of the performance leaders in the high-end processing arena and has achieved
considerable success and penetration in the Fortune 500 market. The certification announced today
enables R/3 customers in the S/390 environment to exploit the performance, scalability, and
availability offered by these processors.

"We have a growing interest from our customers who consider high availability and scalability as
critical factors for choosing the S/390 platform as the R/3 database server," said Lawrence Wilcox,
product manager for SAP solutions within the HDS' Compute line of business.

"With our new partnership with SAP AG, we can now offer this solution not only to our current SAP
R/2(TM) customers who may want to migrate to R/3 on the same platform, but also to those
customers who want to implement R/3 as part of a S/390 environment."

Key Benefits

The addition of HDS as a certified partner offers customers the choice of a leading S/390 compatible
vendor, and access to the HDS range of processor systems. The HDS Skyline and Pilot processors
offer a broad range of growth options that are designed with both the smaller customer and larger
corporate accounts in mind, to simultaneously support their user requirements with subsecond
response times.

SAP Competency Center

To further demonstrate its commitment to SAP business solutions, HDS has established a SAP
Competency Center in Santa Clara, Calif. where SAP(TM)R/3(TM)-trained specialists perform a wide
range of services. Working closely with SAP personnel in Walldorf, Germany, the HDS SAP
Competency Center provides support for the HDS solution for SAP R/3 in the areas of performance
tuning, sizing, and capacity planning as well as benchmark statistics for SAP Standard Application
benchmarks.
