09/14 07:51 Viagra likely to get EU green light on Tuesday BRUSSELS, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Pfizer Inc's <PFE.N> anti-impotence drug Viagra is likely to be cleared for sale in the 15-country European Union on Tuesday, a European Commission spokesman said on Monday. Barring last-minute hitches, EU Industry Commissioner Martin Bangemann will sign the marketing authorisation in Strasbourg, France, where he will be attending a European Parliament session, spokesman Jochen Kubosch told reporters. The Commission, the EU's executive arm, has authorised Bangemann to take the final decision, which will basically rubber stamp earlier proposals by EU scientific experts. Viagra was endorsed in June by the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products in London and in August by an EU medicines advisory committee. "There is no reason not to follow the opinion of (those two bodies)," Kubosch said. The EU received applications to market Viagra from Pfizer UK and Roerig Farmaceutici SpA, both units of the U.S. company. Kubosch said he could not say how long it would take for Viagra to reach consumers. But a Pfizer spokesman said last month that, based on experience in the United States where Viagra has been on the market since April, it could take about two weeks after formal approval.
