Company Press Release

Informix and Vsys Provide Unique Internet Telephony Solution for Intelligent Network Applications

MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Informix(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:IFMX - news), the technology leader in database-powered solutions, announced today that its database technology is powering a revolutionary Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution for intelligent network applications with strategic partner Vsys, a world-class provider of Internet Telephony products and services.

At today's Voice on the Net (VON) show in Washington, D.C., Vsys announced VSwitch, a solution that gives data networks (i.e. the Internet) the capability to transport traditional voice calls.

VSwitch provides the necessary infrastructure to converge heterogeneous voice and data networks, giving callers with access to either type of network the ability to seamlessly complete a telephone call to any destination. It also enables the timely introduction of intelligent network services like Local Number Portability (LNP) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) -- a unique aspect not available with most Internet Telephony solutions.

A growing number of telco customers are looking to data and voice integration as a way to lower costs and increase communication options. VSwitch is a comprehensive solution supplying service providers with a way to differentiate themselves in the competitive marketplace and give customers the technology they are requesting.

Utilizing the telco-grade scalability, reliability and performance of Informix Dynamic Server(tm), Internet Telephony gives service providers of all sizes the ability to build customer loyalty and increase revenue through enhanced service offerings.

''From start to finish, Informix's database works with VSwitch to manage and track the critical event data necessary for system monitoring and customer billing,'' said Bob Wise, vice president of engineering at Vsys.

''It is important that Internet service providers can offer their customers the same reliability they have with traditional voice networks on IP networks. We took this into consideration when choosing a database for VSwitch, and Informix's reliability, advanced data replication and proven performance were significant factors in our final decision.''

First targeted toward small- to mid-size service providers that have the ability to implement cutting-edge technology on a moderate scale, Informix's scalability and VSwitch's core technology provide sufficient infrastructure to rapidly expand the system to carrier-scale. Informix's open architecture gives Vsys the ability to easily add feature enhancements and gives customers the option of choosing which third-party software vendors to use for billing or reporting applications.

''It was important to keep costs down and still provide customers with superior system performance and the capability to expand,'' said Wise. ''Informix was the only vendor with the technology and flexibility to take into consideration the long-term business benefits that this product is expected to see.''

Vsys developed VSwitch from years of consulting experience in the telco industry. It utilizes the most recent version of Informix Dynamic Server 7.3 and resides on a Unix-based server.

''Voice over IP is an emerging technology with immense business possibilities in the competitive telecommunications marketplace,'' said Fred Thompson, director of global telecom at Informix. ''We are excited that Vsys chose Informix to bring a tangible solution to this expanding industry segment.''
