Patriot Scientific's Powerful PSC1000 Microprocessor Helps Support New Oracle Video Servers

Digital Video Providers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Patriot Scientific Corp. (OTCBB:PTSC - news) today said its PSC1000, embedded as a powerful Java-based microprocessor in a single computer interface circuit card developed by GENROCO Inc. (OTCBB:GRCI - news), will help support a new version of Oracle Corp.'s (NASDAQ:ORCL - news) Oracle Video Server.

The processor is considered an integral part of an interface card produced by GENROCO for Oracle and several major platform vendors.

Oracle's Video Server (OVS) is being augmented to help cable television operators convert to broadcasting digital video. Having originated in Europe and now being adopted in the United States, DVB is an important worldwide standard for connection of components making up digital video studios. Recently, large cable television companies, such as Time-Warner, TCI, Cox and others have announced plans to install millions of home set-top boxes for the introduction of video on demand, followed by interactive digital TV.

Oracle is the world's second largest software company, GENROCO is one of the world's premiere suppliers of ultra high performance digital video, storage and network controller products. GENROCO controllers are driven by Patriot Scientific PSC1000, a versatile, high performance, Java-based microprocessor.

Oracle and GENROCO have announced they joined forces to offer analog cable television service providers easy access to broadcasting interactive digital video transmissions. Oracle developed a new version of Oracle's Video Server, compatible with GENROCO's TURBOfibre(R) Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) computer interfaces, which can now be used to provide video-on-demand and other interactive services.

The two companies have collaborated to fully integrate GENROCO's transport drivers for their TURBOfibre Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) computer interfaces into new releases of Oracle Video Server. The combination can be used on a wide variety of UNIX and Windows NT servers to provide video-on-demand and other interactive services.

Oracle's OVS has been configured so that broadcasters and cable TV operators have a safe, reliable, step-by-step approach to realizing new revenues through digital television services. The OVS solution offers users a practical, cost-effective transition from analog to digital while meeting the need for reliability, speed and quality.

Powering this new solution is Patriot's PSC1000 Java-based microprocessor, which provides high data transmission bandwidth and low host overhead. It was chosen by GENROCO over other microprocessors from firms such as Digital Semiconductor and Intel because its technology ''was exactly what we needed to ensure the performance and flexibility of our next-generation controllers,'' said GENROCO's chairman and chief executive officer, Carl Pick.

''The PSC1000's stack-based architecture is best for real-time operating systems,'' said Pick, in explaining why his company chose the Patriot microprocessor as its engine. ''With Patriot's processor, we have flexibility in tasking, as well as ultra high speed interfacing. It is the best choice for our real-time requirements based on its low cost, small size and high performance.''

''This latest application once again underscores our processor's extraordinary flexibility,'' said Patriot's president and CEO, Jim Lunney. ''We're extremely proud of our partnership with GENROCO, and the high visibility that an opportunity like this offers us as we move toward commercialization of the PSC1000.''

Oracle and Silicon Graphics Inc. (NYSE:SGI - news) announced last week a cooperative development and marketing agreement expanding Oracle's Advanced Broadcast offerings with a worldwide initiative to deliver a Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) and residential interactive digital TV solution. OVS will be exhibited at the International Broadcasters Conference being held Sept. 11-15, 1998 in Amsterdam.

In the demonstration the video serving software will pair with a Silicon Graphics Server to show DVB-compliant output for near-video-on-demand and pay-per-view applications. GENROCO indicates that their PSC1000 powered TURBOfibre DVB interface card is an integral part of the Silicon Graphics OVS-based server, and will also be used in similar systems from Compaq Computer Corp. [NYSE:CPQ - news] and Sun Microsystems.

Founded in 1987, Patriot Scientific Corp. designs, markets and manufactures: the PSC1000, based on the patented ShBoom technology, a 32-bit microprocessor targeted at Java and Internet appliances as well as the traditional embedded systems markets; high performance ISDN Basis Rate and Primary Rate products for digital communications; and ground penetrating radar and ionized gas antenna technologies.
