Mgmt. comments in the latest Semitool layoff announcement suggests bookings are continuing to plunge in the industry:

Commenting on the workforce reductions, Ray Thompson, Chairman, said,
"Semitool's new order rate has continued to weaken in the first two months of
our fourth quarter
as our customers delay equipment purchases because of the
difficult Asian economic situation, industry overcapacity and the changing
personal computer market. VLSI Research, Inc. is projecting calendar year
1998 semiconductor capital equipment spending to be off 28% from last year.
This market weakness is expected to continue into the first half of calendar
year 1999. Some of us in this industry haven't seen a downturn of this
magnitude since 1974.
Given these factors, we are reducing our workforce and
will continue to pursue expense reductions in other areas."
