Don't know it this is relevant or not, but in a previous post of mine, I mentioned that whenever I use my ATM card instead of writing a check, both Visa and the bank get a cut of the ?1.5% charge.

When I use the check card, the merchant usually asks me if it is a debit or a credit card.

I always say it's a credit card. On credit card charges, the merchant must pay the 1-2% fee to Visa.

If I use it as a debit (or ATM) transaction, *I* get to pay the fee - usually twice: one charge from the store, and another charge from my bank for using the card at someone else's ATM (which is what those POS terminals are, for the purposes of the transaction).

Rule #1: No matter what they tell ya, it's always a credit card transaction! :)
