E,
Thanks for your response--it gave me an opportunity to scrutinize my thinking.
Play along a little more please. Let's assume you landed on a deserted island and found a clock lying on the beach. Not only was it a beautiful object in an aesthetic sense, but when you removed its casing you discovered a marvelous mechanism--one whose precise functioning clearly enabled this device to perform as it did. Further, let's assume you had never seen, nor heard of a clock before.
Would you believe:
A) This "thing" is a naturally occuring object on this island
or
B) This "thing" was intentionally made by human hands and somehow found its way to this location.
As a theist, I believe B. I see myself as a visitor to this island (our world) and while here have observed a beautiful clock (life) which operates with incredible precision: the rising and setting of the sun, the seasons, the food chain, etc. As a gardener, I am continually amazed by the elegant architecture of biology, and further believe the greatest success science can claim is the documentation of our world's marvelous mechanism.
I cannot imagine the organization of the world to be a matter of random luck. I believe its mechanism reveals an intentional design by a Creator. And I even allow for evolution, for it too reveals an intelligently designed process. Sadly, I consider those who can't see and appreciate the majesty of this design to be basement dwellers in the mansion of life.
Well, this post doesn't address the issue of the institutions of marriage and religion, but it does address something which is personally of more significance. You inspired me to examine why I believe what I do, and that is good. Thanks.
