SP, happens to me, too. I usually have several browser windows open.
When SI is slow in fetching a link, I just switch to another browser
window (say the NYT) and do some reading there. Or, I read some
e-mail. Often after a minute or so I get a message that the SI URL I wanted doesn't exist. Now pushing STOP is unnecessary and the browser stays open. So I click on the SI hot link again.

This is often just a temporary condition. But I never wait in the
same window for a page to appear, if it is very slow.
