HP NetServer System Delivers Leading Performance With SAP R/3 and Oracle8 On Intel-Based Servers

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Hewlett-Packard Company and Oracle(R) Corporation today announced one of the highest performance results ever for the SAP R/3 application suite running on an Intel architecture server and Windows NT(R). This record-setting performance was made possible by the soon-to-be-announced four-way Intel Pentium(R) II Xeon processor-based HP NetServer system. The announcement was made here.

The HP, Oracle and SAP solution supports 2,700 (Sales and Distribution) benchmark users, almost 5 percent greater performance than the leading competitor's solution. The new NetServer system, to be released later this month, is the foundation of an overall high-availability enterprise solution.

''This incredible performance means that businesses will be able to increase productivity, improve scalability, and grow capacity for their computing operations,'' said Cathy FitzGerald, worldwide marketing manager for HP's Enterprise NetServer Division. ''We focus our efforts on ensuring real-world effectiveness and performance, and the new NetServer system provides the world's most powerful Intel architecture platform from which to build a comprehensive enterprise solution.''

PARTNERS AGREE

''This benchmark is the result of a close working relationship with HP and reinforces our performance leadership,'' said Dan Poirier, vice president of the Hewlett-Packard Division, Oracle. ''Oracle8(TM) provides the scalability and high performance that SAP customers need; with the new NetServer system and Oracle8, customers can take advantage of a proven, reliable and cost effective solution for Windows NT.''

''This outstanding result exemplifies the power of combining the proven expertise of HP and Oracle with the leading performance of the Intel Pentium II Xeon processor,'' said John Miner, vice president and general manager, Enterprise Server Group, Intel Corporation [Nasdaq:INTC - news]. ''This solution enables organizations of any size to maximize powerful, reliable, enterprisewide technology, such as SAP R/3, for today's mission-critical environments.''

SAP BENCHMARK DETAILS

The new HP NetServer system supported 2,700 SAP SD benchmark users at an average response time of 1.98 seconds and a total throughput of 811,000 dialog steps per hour. This equates to the processing of 270,000 fully business processed order line-item transactions in one hour. The benchmark was run using Oracle version 8.0.4 and Microsoft(R) Windows NT 4.0 Server and was executed by HP and Oracle in Cupertino, Calif. The database server system was configured with four Intel Pentium II Xeon 400MHz processors each with 1MB L2 cache, 2GB of SDRAM memory and 580GB of disk space. Sixteen systems acted as application servers, each configured with four Intel Pentium II Xeon 400MHz processors and 1GB of memory, one with four Intel Pentium Pro 200MHz processors and 512MB of memory. The CPU utilization was 99 percent on the database server and 70 percent on the application servers. Details are available on request from HP or SAP AG [NYSE:SAP - news].
