1 You end up with two Internet Service Providers, ISPs. One is PC Direct and the other is your local ISP or GTE in the example given.

2 You send requests for data to your local ISP, this is referred to as the upload link.

3. Your local ISP forwards your request to PC Direct.

4. PC Direct sends the data you requested via satellite to the satellite receiver mounted on your house. This is referred to as the download link.

5. From your satellite receiver the data goes to your PC via a wire connecting your PC to your satellite receiver.

A good way to upgrade the speed of your internet connection is to just increase the download speed of your internet connection and leave the upload speed unchanged. Because the majority of the time the amount of data you download is many times greater than the amount of data you upload. This is what the combination of PC Direct and your local ISP offers. With PC Direct you can download data about 10 faster than you can upload.
