Since it hasn't actually happened, we have no case law on which to draw to see the results.

However, "impeachment" was (is?) the ultimate penalty for a sitting President, and technically it was designed to result in removal from office because criminal courts cannot reach to the Presidency. As I read it, that means the Senate, as a body, votes on the truthfulness of the articles as rendered by the House. Acting as a court/jury, they render a jury-like judgement to the President of the Senate (acting as the judge of the Senate court). The judgement is then put in a letter which essentially removes the President from office at a specified date.

I haven't got the references handy, but that's what I can recall.
