<<U.S. manufacturers' profits fell in Q2 '98

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - After-tax profits of U.S. manufacturing companies averaged a seasonally adjusted 5.7 cents per
dollar of sales in the second quarter of 1998, the Commerce Department said Monday.

That was down from 7.6 cents per dollar of sales in the first quarter of 1998. It also was less than profits a year earlier in the second
quarter of 1997, which averaged a seasonally adjusted 6.4 cents per dollar of sales.

Total seasonally adjusted profits after taxes were $55.56 billion on net sales of $978.72 billion in the second quarter.

In the first quarter, profits were $74.46 billion on net sales of $984.18 billion. In the second quarter of 1997, profits were $62.32 billion on net sales of $971.80 billion.

The report is based on quarterly financial reports from about 8,300 corporations, the department said.

After-tax profits of non-durable manufacturing companies rose to $31.16 billion in the second quarter from $29.23 billion in the first quarter of 1998. After-tax profits of durables manufacturers fell to $24.40 billion in the second quarter from $45.23 billion in the previous quarter, the department said. >>
