Vitesse Introduces Gigabit Interconnect IC for High Speed Backplanes
CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (Nasdaq:VTSS - news) Monday introduced the VSC7211 Gigabit Interconnect IC for 1Gb/s and 1.25Gb/s serial interconnection over system backplanes or between systems.

The VSC7211 accepts one channel of 8-bit parallel data, performs 8B/10B encoding and decoding, and sends the data over a single differential signal pair, while automatically compensating for data skew among multiple VSC7211 channels. This IC may be used in conjunction with its companion product, the four-channel VSC7214.

These two products eliminate the cumbersome task of designing parallel bus architectures for network switches, routers, hubs, I/O modules and other equipment with high-bandwidth interconnection requirements.

Compared with parallel interconnect schemes, the VSC7211 and VSC7214 offer lower component count and circuit complexity, use less board space and power, and allow greater flexibility in configuration for the system designer. The implementation of arbitrarily large parallel-to-serial links is possible with multiple VSC7211s and VSC7214s.

The 8-bit channel configuration of the VSC7211 is compatible with standard, existing architectures and supports unencoded transmission rates between 800 and 1000Mb/s in both directions.

''The VSC7211 is the easiest way to move high-speed 8-bit data from point A to point B,'' stated Fred Weniger, Vitesse product marketing manager. ''The VSC7211 and VSC7214 are simple, more compact and robust replacements for parallel buses. And, they contain logic for synchronization, deskewing and coding that other transceivers do not,'' continued Weniger.

There are two speed grades available: the VSC7211-11 and the VSC7211-13. The reference clock frequency of the VSC7211-11 can operate between 98 and 110MHz and for the VSC7211-13, between 110 and 130MHz. The VSC7211 power supply is 3.3V, with a typical power dissipation of 1.3W. Packaged in a low-cost 64 pin, 10mm, thermally enhanced PQFP, the VSC7211 is $22.85 in quantities of 10K. Samples are available now, with production pieces available later this year.

Vitesse Semiconductor is a world leader in the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of high-bandwidth communications and Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) integrated circuits (ICs). The company's products address the needs of telecommunications, datacommunications and ATE equipment manufacturers who demand a combination of high-speed, high-complexity and low-power dissipation.

Vitesse corporate headquarters is in Camarillo, with its second fabrication facility in Colorado Springs, Colo., producing volume supplies of ICs. Company/product information can be found on the Web at www.vitesse.com.
