U.K. Imposes 'Interim' Ban on Viagra in National Health Service

London, Sept. 14 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. Health Secretary Frank
Dobson has placed a temporary ban on National Health Service
doctors prescribing the impotence drug Viagra.

He said, ''media coverage of this drug to date has created
expectations that could prove a serious drain on the funds of
the NHS. If this were to happen.''

He said the ruling was ''interim'' until ministers had
consulted further with scientific and clinical advisors and the
manufacturers. The drug, made in the U.S. by Pfizer Inc., is
expected to receive marketing authorization Tuesday from the
European Commission.

In instructions to Britain's NHS doctors, the medical
director of the state-owned service, Graham Winyard, said, ''I
would stress that this is interim guidance only and should not
be taken as implying that ministers have made decisions relating
to the nature and extent of any future availability of this drug
as part of NHS services.''

The drug is being sold by private doctors.
