U.S. must act if Latam economies imperiled-Clinton

Reuters, Monday, September 14, 1998 at 13:23

NEW YORK, Sept 14 (Reuters) - U.S. President Bill Clinton
on Monday urged strong action by the United States and other
major economic powers should the financial crisis in Asia and
other overseas economies threaten Latin America.
"We have to be ready to respond immediately and with
financial force if necessary to the currency crisis if it
spreads, especially if it threatens the economies of Latin
America," Clinton said in a speech to the Council on Foreign
Relations.
Clinton also said the International Monetary Fund might
need to use emergency funds to try to stem the spreading
crisis.
"The major economies should stand ready to activate the $15
billion now in the emergency funds of the IMF," Clinton added.
