I went to the store's Labor Day sale. It looked good but I'm not sure it's enough to pull them out of their problems. The latest from the Tennessee Investor (Sept 98) reads

" Reported 2Q losses of 6 cents vs a loss of 18 cents with a dismal same store decrease of 8.5%. On Labor Day the company will begin thier new Service Merchandise concept with heavy emphasis on home furnishings and jewelry. The company estimates that 70% of their merchandise will be on the floor as opposed to the backroom, which has been the norm. It's very doubtful that the new Service will have much effect on sales or the bottom line. If the new concept doesn't work look for Service to be sold. We will visit their stores and keep you apprised of their success."

I keep SME on my watch list but I would be afraid to get in much over a buck a share. My current favorite Tennessee Investor pick is SATH and I'm in it long...Two other favorite picks of mine are MSN and CAGI.
