CIEN reminds me of Ascend. Anyone recall Ascend in the 20's. There was so much negative sentiment on the company. Most people at that time felt that Ascend was heading in the teens. I refer you to Yahoo message board for Ascend. It was Mike Cammarata who kept our sanity, and gave us some excellent feedback on Ascend. Nine months later Ascend was back on track in the 30's and 40's and then 50's. CIEN has been brutalized. No thanks to the weak market conditions. Two things I like about CIEN is that they are in the forefront of DWDM with their III generation products, and the possibility of another buyout. Most investors have overlooked Ascend Communications as a possible acquirer. As many feel that LU,or CSCO would utlimately make an offer. I feel Ascend needs to intensify the competition or be gobbled up [LU comes to mind here]. I remember Mory Ejabat being interviewed by CNBC and he clearly replied "NO" he was not in talks with LUCENT. (day when Mory was on CNBC announcing that Ascend had indeed made a bid for Stratus Computer). If Ascend is to remain independent, their greatest challenge is competition from CSCO. Realizing their own challenges and needs, I think Ascend is the most likely candidate for gobbling up CIEN.
